In a move signaling a radical overhaul of U.S. defense strategy, the Pentagon has announced the launch of Project Meridian. This 120-day initiative will be co-led by Elon Musk, Anduril founder Palmer Luckey, and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, tasked with mapping the technologies that will dominate battlefields in the coming decades.
The Mission of Project Meridian
According to U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, the project is more than a traditional strategic study; it is an effort to identify critical capability gaps. The team will propose specific solutions integrating artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and satellite communications, drawing expertise from outside the traditional military establishment. The first official report is expected on January 28, 2027.
The Rise of Autonomous Warfare Command
Alongside Project Meridian, the Pentagon announced the creation of the Autonomous Warfare Command (AUTOWARCOM). This new four-star command will focus on accelerating the operational use of drones and robotic systems across all military branches. This shift is driven by lessons from recent conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine, where low-cost autonomous systems have proven pivotal.
"The goal is the faster integration of autonomous capabilities across the entire American military," Hegseth stated at the Quantico Marine Corps Base.
Structural Reforms and Energy Autonomy
The reorganization also includes a 20% reduction in general and admiral positions, as well as the "Fortress America" program. The latter aims for the energy independence of military bases from civilian grids, ensuring continued operations during infrastructure attacks. Furthermore, plans are underway for a new large-scale military facility in the U.S., capable of housing up to 25.000 personnel.
