East Attica is shedding its image as a mere airport periphery, evolving into a vital hub for the new digital economy. In the broader zone of Spata, Paiania, Koropi, and Pallini, a high-value ecosystem is emerging, linking data infrastructure with innovation and sustainability.

The Hyperscale Data Center Map

Microsoft's presence serves as the central pillar of this transition. With a €1 billion investment, the company is creating Greece's first cloud region, consisting of three data centers. The Spata project is progressing on schedule, targeting full activation by early 2028. Simultaneously, France's Data4 is developing a facility in Paiania to be leased by the tech giant.

The PPC Group (DEI) is also entering the digital infrastructure arena through the EDGNEX joint venture with the DAMAC Group. This investment, reaching €150 million in its first phase, marks PPC's transformation into an integrated digital infrastructure player combining energy and data.

Established Players and New Projects

Digital Realty (via Lamda Hellix) maintains a strong footprint in Koropi with three existing data centers and the imminent completion of Athens 4, an investment exceeding €100 million. Furthermore, Apto (a Pimco subsidiary) in collaboration with Dromeus Capital is planning "Data Center Olive," a hyperscale complex in Spata that could reach €770 million upon full development.

Multidimensional Innovation and Social Impact

The region's growth extends beyond data storage:

  • Biotechnology: ELPEN has established the Athens LifeTech Park, Greece's first biotech park.
  • Space-tech: Open Cosmos Aegean is developing a microsatellite production base in Pallini.
  • Creator Economy: Chef Akis Petretzikis is creating a modern digital content production hub in Mesogeia.

Microsoft is linking its investment to the local community through Minecraft Education programs in 17 schools and digital training initiatives for residents.
