In a major strategic move to bolster its position in the artificial intelligence market, AMD has announced the acquisition of World Labs. The all-stock transaction is valued at approximately $8.2 billion. World Labs, an AI research lab co-founded in 2024 by renowned researcher Dr. Fei-Fei Li, achieved a $1 billion valuation within months of its launch.
Leadership and Strategic Goals
Upon the deal's expected closing by year-end, Dr. Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as Executive Vice President and Chief Scientist, reporting directly to AMD CEO Lisa Su. The World Labs team is slated to maintain its focus on advancing AI model research. AMD noted that the acquisition will enhance its capacity to develop hardware, software, and systems tailored to the requirements of emerging AI applications.
World Labs launched its first commercial product, a world generation model named "Marble," in 2025. Marble enables users to generate interactive 3D environments from text prompts, showcasing the startup's capabilities beyond standard large language models (LLMs).
Competitive Landscape
This acquisition follows a trend of multi-billion dollar deals in the AI sector, including Nvidia's recent announcement to acquire Hugging Face for nearly $13 billion. Lisa Su emphasized that building next-generation compute platforms requires the deep insight into model evolution that the World Labs team provides.
Dr. Li expressed that joining AMD is the right path to continue the mission of creating foundation models that solve real-world problems while maintaining an open approach with the broader AI community and ecosystem.
