Amazon is strengthening its energy foundation in Sweden by entering into four new long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) for wind energy. This move aims to support the company’s infrastructure expansion, driven by the increasing demands of cloud services and artificial intelligence.

Expanding Wind Capacity

The agreements add nearly 200 megawatts (MW) to Amazon's contracted wind capacity in the country. According to the company, once all projects are fully operational, the total portfolio is expected to approach 1 gigawatt (GW). The specific wind farms involved include:

  • Boarp, Dållebo, and Fågelås (currently operational)
  • Fageråsen (under construction)

The projects are being developed in collaboration with Eolus and OX2. Amazon estimates that the annual production from its total Swedish wind portfolio will be equivalent to the energy consumption of more than 350,000 households. The financial terms of these new deals were not disclosed.

The Link Between Data Centers and AI

Securing energy has become a critical component of Amazon’s expansion strategy, as the company plans to increase data center capacity in Eskilstuna, Katrineholm, and Västerås. The surge in demand for AI applications is driving computational needs higher, making energy access as vital as the procurement of processors and the construction of physical infrastructure.
