Kyiv was hit by a severe ballistic missile strike early Saturday morning, with Ukrainian authorities confirming at least nine fatalities. According to emergency services, another 23 civilians were injured, as the death toll was revised upwards during ongoing rescue operations.
Explosions and Destruction in the Capital
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that the capital was targeted by ballistic missiles, while the AFP news agency reported more than ten powerful explosions. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a building was partially destroyed, leaving individuals trapped inside the rubble.
The attack triggered fires across various parts of the city, and power outages were reported in several neighborhoods. The use of ballistic missiles by Russian forces has intensified recently, causing serious concern for the Ukrainian leadership.
The Urgency of Anti-Ballistic Defense
Defending against ballistic weapons, which are exceptionally difficult to intercept, is now considered an "absolute priority" for the Ukrainian government. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the urgent need for anti-ballistic missile systems as Moscow escalates its strikes against urban centers.
