Anthropic has announced its expansion into Singapore, marking the city-state as its fifth hub in the Asia-Pacific region. The new office, scheduled to open in October, follows the company's established presence in Tokyo, Seoul, Bengaluru, and Sydney.
High Demand and Strategic Leadership
The decision to establish a physical presence in Singapore is driven by usage metrics. According to Anthropic, Singapore ranks second out of 121 countries in per capita Claude usage, trailing only Australia. Chris Ciauri, Anthropic’s international managing director, described the move as a "natural next step" for the firm.
The regional expansion will be spearheaded by Dale Finlay, who joins Anthropic after a brief six-month tenure as OpenAI’s regional go-to-market head. Finlay noted that while ambition is high in Southeast Asia, "trust" remains the primary hurdle for AI adoption in business operations.
The Race Against OpenAI
Anthropic’s move intensifies its rivalry with OpenAI, which established its regional headquarters in Singapore in late 2024. Reports indicate OpenAI is planning to lease 100,000 square feet of office space and has recently hired former Meta executive Sandhya Devanathan to lead its ASEAN and Australia operations.
Singapore’s Vision as an "AI Nation"
Singapore continues to serve as a strategic entry point for Southeast Asia, bolstered by political stability and business-friendly regulations. The government has committed over 1 billion Singapore dollars (approximately $770 million) to advance public AI capabilities.
In a related development, AI-powered note-taker manufacturer Plaud also launched its regional headquarters in Singapore on September 16. The firm announced a 20 million Singapore dollar investment, with CEO Nathan Xu highlighting that mastering AI in Asia's complex linguistic environment is a benchmark for global success.
