The obsession of the ultra-wealthy with the apocalypse is no longer a science fiction trope but a tangible reality manifested through expensive construction projects and controversial ideological shifts. From Elon Musk’s Mars ambitions to Mark Zuckerberg’s fortified Hawaiian compound, the tech elite appears to be preparing for a future where global order collapses.

The “Wealth Rapture” and Tech Fascism

In their upcoming book, “End Times Fascism,” author Naomi Klein and journalist Astra Taylor analyze this mindset, which they term the “wealth rapture.” According to Klein, these “tech oligarchs” are forecasting an end of the world that they themselves are accelerating, while simultaneously seeking to insulate themselves from its consequences in private islands or fortified enclaves.

This phenomenon is widespread among the elite:

  • Peter Thiel attempted to build an underground “City of Freedom” in New Zealand.
  • The company Safe is planning mass-produced armored doomsday resorts across 50 US cities.
  • Gated communities in Guatemala operate under their own rules, bypassing national governance.

The Abandonment of Democracy

Behind these physical structures lies a deeper political transformation. Peter Thiel famously stated in 2009 that he no longer believes freedom and democracy are compatible. This ideology aims to construct high-luxury, non-democratic fortresses protected by private mercenaries and AI robots, funded through cryptocurrencies.

“They are choosing to let the Earth burn, relying on their bunkers,” Klein and Taylor write, describing this belief system as “genocidal at its core.”

Despite the grim outlook, Klein argues that recognizing the extent of this “Armageddon complex” creates opportunities for resistance. She calls for a broad movement based on a commitment to one another and the protection of the planet, opposing those she labels “tech traitors.”
