OpenAI is implementing a major shift for ChatGPT users on its free and Go tiers. Starting next week, users on these levels will be able to engage in unlimited text chats with the chatbot, according to the company. This move removes the rate limits that currently apply to text-based interactions on these tiers.
New Features for Free Users
While text limits are being lifted, OpenAI noted that messages involving file uploads and images will continue to have restrictions. Additionally, starting next week:
- A new “Think” button will be introduced, allowing users to access higher reasoning for complex queries.
- The default AI model for these users is being upgraded to the recently released GPT-5.6 Luna.
Enhancements for Plus and Pro Subscribers
For Plus and Pro subscribers, the GPT-5.6 Sol model is receiving an update focused on factual reliability. OpenAI states that the new GPT-5.6 Sol is designed to minimize errors, particularly when responses depend on:
- Dates and numbers
- Sources and rules
- Specific assumptions
The updated Sol model aims to provide more direct responses with tighter formatting, avoiding extraneous detail. Furthermore, subscribers will gain access to a new slider to determine “how much thought ChatGPT puts into an answer.” Both the updated GPT-5.6 Sol and the slider functionality are scheduled to become available starting Thursday.
