Google has announced a significant update to its Discover feed, integrating an AI-driven interface to enhance content discovery. The new feature, rolling out to the Google app in the "coming days," will allow users to customize their feed by simply describing what they want to see.
How the Chatbot Interface Works
Users can access the customization tool through the three-dot menu on their Discover feed. As demonstrated by Google, the feature opens a chatbot-style interface where users can describe their content preferences. The AI then confirms these choices, outlines the types of content it will prioritize, and "remembers" these settings for future visits. Users retain the ability to provide additional information if the initial results are not precise before hitting "Refresh your feed."
Broader Updates to News Personalization
Beyond the Discover feed, Google introduced several other updates aimed at personalizing the user experience:
- Personalized Audio Briefings: Android users of the Google News app will soon be able to customize their daily audio news summaries.
- Preferred Sources Update: A new interactive button can now be placed directly on publishers' websites. This allows readers to quickly add a specific outlet to their "Preferred Sources" list for Search, AI Overviews, and AI Mode without navigating away from the current page.
This development mirrors trends seen in other social platforms like YouTube, Instagram, Bluesky, and X, which have also implemented AI-based methods for feed customization.
