During its "Gemini at Work" event, Google announced the launch of a "universal" Gemini AI agent designed to handle tasks in the background across various apps and devices. The tool will be integrated into the Gemini Enterprise app, providing users with a single interface to chat with the agent and assign complex workflows.
Cross-Platform Integration
The Gemini agent is designed to work beyond the standard Google Workspace suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Calendar). It can interact with third-party platforms such as Slack and Microsoft 365. Because the agent operates in the cloud, it maintains consistent context across mobile devices, desktops, and the web, ensuring that the AI is always up to speed with the user's current progress.
The Rise of 'Coworker Agents'
Google is introducing the concept of "coworker agents" that possess their own dedicated identities and corporate email addresses (e.g., "@agents.company.com"). These agents can collaborate with job-specific sub-agents to complete complex projects. According to Google, the system will automatically select the AI model best suited for the specific task at hand.
Currently, the universal Gemini agent is available only to enterprise customers in private preview. While Google previously launched the consumer-focused Gemini Spark in May, this new enterprise offering represents a broader vision of an AI assistant capable of performing work from a unified window rather than through fragmented interfaces.
