Reddit is testing a new way for users to engage with its platform by transforming text-based threads into audio and video content. As part of a limited experiment, the platform is using AI voices to narrate main posts and their accompanying comments, effectively turning long-form text into digestible multimedia clips.

The Multimedia Interface

The experimental videos feature AI-generated voices reading out the content while the corresponding text is highlighted on-screen. A disclaimer labeled "Real conversation voiced by AI" appears beneath the video to ensure transparency. Users can navigate between the traditional text thread and the new video format using a simple "Read" or "Play" toggle located at the top of the post.

While this format may lower the barrier to entry for those unfamiliar with forum-style layouts, it presents potential hurdles. Issues such as AI mispronunciations or the citation of comments out of context remain concerns during this early phase.

Strategic Objectives

This initiative aligns with Reddit's broader strategy, as outlined in a recent shareholder letter, to create a "modernized video experience." During an earnings call, CEO Steve Huffman highlighted the popularity of third-party channels that already specialize in reading Reddit posts aloud. Huffman suggested that a spoken version of Reddit content could be highly engaging for users who prefer listening to content in the background.

Reddit spokesperson Rosa Kim confirmed that the company is currently manually selecting the posts that undergo this conversion. The experiment is live on the web and is scheduled for rollout on iOS and Android starting Tuesday.
