The European Commission is increasing pressure on Meta and TikTok, demanding that the platforms take decisive measures to curb disinformation, particularly during times of crisis. This move follows recent developments in Ceuta, where a surge in the migration crisis last week raised significant concerns in Brussels.
Enhanced Oversight and Cooperation
Henna Virkkunen, the EU Commissioner for Tech Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, held talks with representatives of both companies on Friday. According to her statement, it is imperative for platforms to act in a way that preserves the integrity of the digital space.
The core pillars of the European demand include:
- Strengthening the monitoring of circulated content.
- Deeper cooperation with independent fact-checking organizations.
- Immediate response to crises that facilitate the spread of fake news.
"Platforms must act decisively to maintain the integrity of the digital space, especially in times of crisis," Virkkunen emphasized, setting the stage for the future obligations of digital giants toward European institutions.
