The fashion and footwear industry is entering a new era where 3D printing is evolving from an experimental prototyping technology into a pillar of mass commercial production. adidas has unveiled the Futurecool, a model that redefines sneaker construction by eliminating traditional cutting and sewing methods.
A Seamless Single Structure
Unlike previous iterations where 3D printing was limited to the midsole, the Futurecool is manufactured entirely as a single, continuous structure. The use of additive manufacturing enables the creation of complex geometries that would be impossible to achieve through conventional means. According to the company, the absence of seams allows the shoe to adapt naturally to the foot's shape, providing a "second skin" feel.
Climacool Technology and Materials
The sneaker is built on the Climacool technological platform, featuring an open, lattice construction designed to provide 360-degree ventilation. It is crafted from resin and specialized materials aimed at balancing the flexibility required for daily use with the durability of a conventional athletic shoe. Alexander Taylor, Senior Vice President of Innovation Design & Concepts at adidas, noted that the model was designed for those looking to embrace the future before it goes mainstream.
Availability and Pricing
The rollout of the Futurecool began with an extremely limited release of 400 numbered pairs via a draw on the CONFIRMED app starting August 28. The global commercial launch is scheduled for April 1, 2027. The sneaker will be available as a unisex model in sizes UK 4 to 14, with the official price set at 180 Euros.
