Google is implementing a significant change to its search results presentation by automatically expanding AI Overviews for certain queries. As reported by Search Engine Roundtable, this shift pushes the traditional list of links much further down the page, prioritizing AI-generated content over direct site links.
A Shift in Information Hierarchy
Instead of viewing a partial AI Overview with a "Show more" button, users are now presented with a full AI-generated summary at the top of their search results. This is followed by an "Ask anything" input box before the standard list of links appears. This layout often necessitates extensive scrolling for users looking to access traditional search results.
Dynamic Criteria and User Engagement
The exact criteria for when these summaries expand automatically remain undefined. Google spokesperson Jennifer Kutz stated that AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where systems determine it is most useful for people. Kutz noted that Google's research suggests users find this dynamic experience more helpful and that it leads to deeper engagement in follow-up exploration.
To address potential usability issues, Google confirmed that if a user has already started scrolling to view content below the AI Overview, the expansion is canceled to ensure the user does not lose their reading position.
