Answering calculation-intensive financial questions remains a persistent challenge for Large Language Models (LLMs). Despite their prowess in natural language, LLMs often produce numerically incorrect yet plausible answers when handling complex formulas and temporal constraints. To address this, researchers have introduced CIFQA (Calculation-Intensive Financial Query Answering), a framework grounded in deterministic tools and multi-agent collaboration.
Architecture and Operation
The core innovation of CIFQA lies in the complete separation of language understanding from numerical execution. The system assigns specific roles to specialized agents:
- Query interpretation and routing.
- Parameter extraction.
- Computation planning.
- Final response generation.
While the agents manage the linguistic logic, the actual calculations and rule applications are performed by deterministic Python-based tools. This ensures that financial formulas and interest rate variables are applied with absolute precision.
Performance and Key Findings
In evaluations focused on fixed deposit queries, CIFQA achieved 95.54% accuracy on calculation-intensive tasks and 90.87% overall. The most striking finding of the study is that a 17-billion parameter (17B) open-source model, operating within the CIFQA framework, significantly outperformed much larger frontier models. This suggests that architectural design is a more critical factor for numerical reliability than the scale of the model itself.
