OpenAI has introduced significant upgrades to its ChatGPT Google Chrome extension. While the ChatGPT Atlas browser project has been discontinued, the new extension features allow the AI to utilize the browser tabs a user already has open to perform complex tasks.

Interacting with Chrome Tabs

With the extension installed, OpenAI states that ChatGPT can now view browser tabs when a user tags Chrome in the ChatGPT web or desktop app. A demonstration video showed the AI comparing items across three different open tabs to help a user make a purchasing decision.

Sample queries supported by the upgraded add-on include:

  • Using details from an event brief to fill out registration forms (stopping before submission).
  • Extracting vendor data from multiple tabs into comparison sheets with pricing and key features.
  • Analyzing contractor services across open tabs to draft tailored emails.
  • Filling out medical forms and automatically adding appointments to personal and work calendars.

Sidebar Enhancements and ChatGPT Work

The update also brings the "full power of ChatGPT" to the browser sidebar, including complete conversation history accessible without leaving the current page. Furthermore, ChatGPT Work users can now allow the AI to "control" Chrome tabs for specific actions such as sending messages, downloading files, or organizing and grouping open tabs. This functionality mirrors Google’s Gemini-powered "auto browse" feature.
