Elon Musk’s ambition to produce a “historically accurate” and “anti-woke” version of Homer’s Odyssey via artificial intelligence has debuted with controversial results. Creator Nem Perez was named the winner of the AI filmmaking contest, securing a $100,000 prize for a five-minute epic produced using the Grok Imagine model.
Visual Inconsistencies and Historical Errors
Despite the pledge to remain faithful to Homer’s original work, Perez’s film contains glaring inaccuracies. Most notably, the Cyclops Polyphemus is depicted with three eyes instead of one, and his physical scale shifts dramatically between scenes. Furthermore, Greek soldiers are shown wearing armor characteristic of Roman legionnaires, directly contradicting the project’s goal of historical precision.
The production’s aesthetic has also drawn scrutiny, with mythological figures and gods resembling mobile game graphics. Poseidon emerges from the sea with cartoonish features and an exaggeratedly muscular build. Across the top three contest entries, Odysseus is depicted as a highly muscular figure bearing a striking resemblance to actor Antonio Banderas, while his crew consists of photorealistic, similarly muscular men.
The Limits of Generative AI in Film
The project highlights the persistent weaknesses of generative AI tools in cinematic production. While individual shots may appear visually compelling, maintaining character continuity and narrative cohesion remains a significant hurdle. The film relies on dramatic whispered dialogues, and the editing often obscures the actual moments of conflict during battle scenes.
Reaction to Hollywood’s ‘Woke’ Adaptations
Musk’s initiative followed his public criticism of Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of the epic. Musk accused Nolan of “profaning Homer” by selecting a multicultural cast, alleging the director bowed to “woke rules” to satisfy Oscar requirements. Although Musk previously announced that Grok would produce a full-length feature film of the Odyssey, only these short-form contest entries have been showcased to date.
