Greece enters a new era of computational power with the inauguration of the national supercomputer ‘Daidalos’ in Lavrio. The system, inaugurated on Monday, October 19, by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou, boasts a measured performance of 85.69 petaflops, making it the most powerful in the country's history.

Technical Specifications and Global Ranking

Daidalos holds the 31st position in the global TOP500 ranking and 23rd in the Green500 for energy efficiency. Built on Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) architecture, it utilizes NVIDIA GH200 accelerators. It employs Direct Liquid Cooling technology, while a 2 MWp solar park helps cover its energy requirements.

Access and Applications

Gradual operations are expected to begin in December, with GRNET managing the calls for proposals. Key application areas include:

  • Health: Developing AI models for personalized medicine and disease detection.
  • Civil Protection: Climate modeling for predicting extreme weather and wildfires.
  • Business: Product simulations to reduce testing time.
  • Language and Culture: Development of large language models specifically for the Greek language.

Cost and Funding

The total budget reached €58.9 million. HPE supplied the equipment (€41m), while MainSys handled the Data Center infrastructure at the historic Electric Power Station in Lavrio (€17.9m). The project was funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility 'Greece 2.0' and the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking.
