Greece is officially entering a new digital era with the acquisition of ‘Daidalos,’ the new national supercomputer that places the country among Europe’s elite computing infrastructures. Representing a €58.9 million investment, the system grants the domestic scientific community capabilities that previously had to be sourced from international centers.
Technical Excellence and Architecture
Built by Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), Daidalos reaches a computing power of 85.69 petaflops. Its architecture is based on the advanced NVIDIA GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip, specifically optimized for High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) model training.
A standout feature of the system is its energy efficiency. It utilizes Direct Liquid Cooling technology, ensuring a lower carbon footprint and stable operation even under full computational load.
Applications and Strategic Impact
Daidalos operates as an interconnected cluster of thousands of cores performing parallel processes. This architecture allows complex problems to be broken down into thousands of tasks, completing in hours what would take conventional systems weeks or months.
- Artificial Intelligence: Training large language and predictive models.
- Medical Research: Drug discovery and genetic data analysis.
- Climate Modeling: Simulating extreme weather events.
- National Defense: Real-time processing of Big Data.
This computational power will be available to universities, research centers, startups, and public agencies, bolstering the domestic innovation ecosystem.
