In the historic former Power Station of Lavrio, a site that once energized Greece’s industrial past, a new digital heart begins to beat. The national supercomputer, DAIDALOS, is officially inaugurated today at the NTUA Technological and Cultural Park, with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis attending the ceremony.

Global Benchmarks and Technical Prowess

With a budget of €58.9 million, DAIDALOS is more than just local infrastructure; it is a globally competitive machine. As of June 2026, it holds the 31st position in the TOP500 global rankings for computing power. Furthermore, it excels in sustainability, ranking 23rd on the Green500 list, which measures energy efficiency in high-performance computing.

The system delivers a measured performance of 85.69 petaflops. This immense power will be directed toward scientific simulations, big data analytics, and the training of advanced artificial intelligence models—tasks that were previously hindered by limited local resources.

Empowering Startups and the PHAROS AI Factory

Implemented by the National Infrastructures for Research and Technology (GRNET), the supercomputer will serve universities, research centers, public entities, and the private sector, specifically targeting startups and SMEs. Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou noted that DAIDALOS will provide the necessary scale for researchers to move from initial testing to full-scale AI implementation.

DAIDALOS serves as the computational core of the PHAROS AI Factory. This initiative combines infrastructure with tools and expertise to foster AI development. The corporate structure of PHAROS—owned 70% by the Growthfund (HCAP) and 30% by the Ministry—is intended to provide the flexibility needed for strategic investments and partnerships.

The project is part of the "Greece 2.0" National Recovery and Resilience Plan, co-funded by the European Union via NextGenerationEU and the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking.
