The agreement for the development of "Achilles’ Shield," Greece's new multi-layered air defense system, is being finalized in Tel Aviv. Part of the "Agenda 2030" military modernization program, the project is expected to be completed within 28 months. Its primary goal is to establish a unified network capable of detecting and neutralizing threats ranging from aircraft and missiles to unmanned systems.

Multi-Layered Defense and Systems

The architecture integrates various systems with different operational ranges to ensure comprehensive coverage:

  • David’s Sling: Intended for long-range defense with a radius of up to 150 km, working alongside existing Patriot batteries.
  • Barak MX: Covers multiple defense layers with a range between 35 and 150 km, depending on the interceptor used.
  • Spyder and Hawk: Tasked with short-range protection and the defense of critical infrastructure.

The ELM-2084 AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar will play a pivotal role, providing the network with critical target detection and tracking data.

Integration and Electronic Warfare

The strategic value of the "Shield" lies in its ability to interconnect with existing high-end assets, such as Rafale and F-16 Viper fighters, Belharra frigates, and the PULS missile system. Furthermore, the architecture includes electronic warfare capabilities, featuring the Greek-developed "Kentauros" system.

The procurement, approved by the Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA) in July 2026 according to ERTnews, is being managed by the General Directorate for Defense Investments and Armaments (GDAEE) in collaboration with Israel’s SIBAT and participating defense entities.
