Germany is reportedly planning a broad cooperation agreement with the American chipmaker Nvidia to accelerate AI adoption across its industrial sector, according to the financial newspaper Handelsblatt. The deal highlights a strategic push to integrate advanced computing into the nation's manufacturing core.
Strategic Objectives and Key Applications
The agreement is expected to be unveiled next week at the "Invest in Germany" conference in Berlin, an event set to be attended by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. Sources indicate the partnership will involve investments totaling hundreds of millions of euros.
The objectives of the deal are twofold:
- Developing AI tools for the physical world, specifically for robotics training and autonomous vehicles.
- Creating high-performance AI models tailored for industrial applications.
The SOOFI Project and Digital Sovereignty
A significant component of the deal involves the SOOFI (Sovereign Open Source Foundation Models) project. Launched last year, this initiative brings together research institutions, universities, and private companies to develop large-scale, open-source AI models within Germany.
While the German government has yet to issue an official comment, the reported deal aligns with Berlin's stated commitment to enhancing European digital sovereignty. By fostering a domestic ecosystem for AI, Germany aims to secure its technological future within the industrial landscape.
