Tesla's vision for urban transportation has entered a new phase as the fully autonomous Cybercab officially begins operations on the streets of Austin, Texas. Users in the area can now summon a ride using the brand-new Robotaxi app, marking the start of a new era for Elon Musk's company.
Design Without Human Control
The Cybercab represents a radical departure from traditional automotive design. It is a two-seater vehicle built exclusively for autonomous driving, reflected in the complete absence of a steering wheel and pedals. Inside the cabin, which is described as comfortable and minimalist, a massive central touchscreen serves as the primary interface for passengers.
Initial reports from early users highlight a smooth driving experience, with the Full Self-Driving (FSD) system managing routes precisely while the suspension provides significant comfort.
Exclusivity and Business Model
While Tesla operates a broader fleet of autonomous Model Ys and Robovans in cities such as Dallas, Miami, and Houston, these futuristic Cybercabs are currently exclusive to Austin. The local fleet consists of 314 vehicles, 45 of which are the new Cybercabs.
Unlike other Tesla models, the Cybercab is not available for retail purchase by individuals. The company's strategy focuses on commercial exploitation through fleets. Tesla has already opened an interest list for businesses looking to purchase vehicles to establish their own local autonomous taxi networks.
