In an era where distinguishing between humans and AI is becoming increasingly difficult, World (formerly Worldcoin)—co-founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman—has announced significant partnerships. Video conferencing giant Zoom, along with major financial firms including Bain Capital and VanEck, are adopting the “Proof of Human” tool to thwart fraud and deepfakes.

The Blue Badge of Humanity

The integration with Zoom will allow users verified via World ID to appear with a specific blue badge on-screen. This badge confirms that the participant is a real human and not a digital twin or bot. This move is deemed necessary as losses from AI-driven fraud, where criminals use deepfakes of executives to trick employees into fraudulent wire transfers, have reached billions of dollars.

Orb Technology and Privacy

Verification relies on an iris-scanning device called the “Orb,” which creates a unique biometric identifier. Despite privacy concerns, World maintains that it uses advanced cryptography and blockchain technology to ensure that no central database of user photos is created. Tiago Sada, World’s Chief Product Officer, compared public suspicion to the initial reactions toward Apple’s Touch ID, emphasizing that the underlying protocol is open-source and auditable.

Tiered Security and AI Agents

The system offers three levels of verification:

  • Proof of Attributes: Based on scanned government documents.
  • Proof of Presence: Requires a selfie.
  • Proof of Human: The highest security tier requiring an Orb scan.

Beyond call security, World is preparing for the future of “agentic commerce,” allowing users to assign their verified status to a single, trusted AI agent for conducting transactions. Similarly, firms like Cloudflare are developing agent ID tools, signaling a shift where bots are treated not just as a menace, but as a major business opportunity.
