The University of Piraeus is expanding its research footprint with the establishment of MASTILAB (Laboratory for Sustainable Efficiency, Smart Technologies, and Informatics). Directed by Professor Angelos Pantouvakis, who also leads the MSc in Shipping Management, the new facility is poised to become a hub for environmental and technological innovation.
Objectives and Research Scope
The primary mission of MASTILAB is to serve as a reference center for the measurement and detection of marine and atmospheric pollutants. Its scope extends beyond mere data collection, aiming to evaluate the broader impacts of pollution on economic and social development, thereby bridging the gap between scientific research and societal needs.
Resource Optimization and Funding
The laboratory's formation is the result of strategic consolidation and resource management, characterized by:
- The merger of pre-existing research structures.
- The reactivation of high-value scientific equipment that had remained idle for several years.
- Substantial funding secured through the Public Investment Program and other targeted financial actions.
Professor Pantouvakis noted that the initiative demonstrates how collaboration and persistence can mobilize resources to benefit research and foster a meaningful connection with the public interest.
