ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is undertaking one of the most ambitious moves in AI history, training a new model that could reach up to 10 trillion parameters. While the project is in its early stages and the final scale remains undecided, the move signals the Chinese giant's determination to reach the pinnacle of the global market.

Targeting Anthropic and Global Leadership

The new model is currently in the pre-training phase, a process expected to last between three and six months. If the 10-trillion parameter goal is met, the system will be approximately three times larger than Moonshot’s Kimi K3, currently the largest Chinese model available.

This scale places ByteDance in the same league as U.S.-based Anthropic. Although Anthropic does not officially disclose parameter counts, market estimates place its Mythos 5 model at 8 trillion parameters and Fable 5 at 5 trillion. However, ByteDance acknowledges that parameter count alone does not dictate performance; architecture and data quality remain equally vital.

The 'Seed' Team and Independent Strategy

At the center of this initiative is the "Seed" team, comprising roughly 2,000 employees, including researchers, engineers, and translators. The team is led by Wu Yonghui, a former scientist at Google DeepMind.

ByteDance is pursuing a distinct strategy by avoiding "model distillation"—the practice of training smaller models using the outputs of larger ones as a guide. The company’s leadership believes that true technological sovereignty can only be achieved through independent development, even if it results in a temporary lag behind competitors.

Infrastructure and Custom Chip Investments

To support these ambitions, ByteDance is investing aggressively in several key areas:

  • Expanding data center networks and cloud services via Volcano Engine.
  • Developing proprietary AI chips to gain greater control over computational resources.
  • Strengthening Doubao, its consumer-facing AI product, which boasts 324 million monthly active users.

Founder Zhang Yiming has set a clear long-term vision for "world-leading" capabilities, aiming to transform ByteDance from a social media powerhouse into one of the world's dominant AI players.
