Spotify Technologies SA is set to identify tracks produced by artificial intelligence using a new “AI Personas” label. The world’s leading music streaming platform aims to clarify for its users which songs are the work of human artists and which are generated artificially.

Algorithmic Filtering and Transparency

The company announced that songs carrying the AI Personas tag will be excluded from recommended playlists unless a subscriber explicitly opts in. Starting August 11, artists will be permitted to tag their own work as AI-generated, with these labels becoming visible on the platform in mid-September.

A community-driven flagging system will enable users to report tracks they suspect were created by AI. For creators who feel their music has been incorrectly labeled, Spotify will offer an appeals process to address the issue.

Industry Context and User Feedback

This initiative follows direct feedback from the audience. “Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don’t like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated,” the company stated on Tuesday.

The music sector has been grappling with AI technology, which allows even those with little musical experience to produce professional-quality tracks quickly. Last year, a fictional band called Velvet Sundown sparked transparency concerns when its music gained traction alongside AI-generated images of non-existent members. To further improve clarity, Spotify is introducing “AI Credits,” a feature allowing artists to specify how AI was integrated into their creative process.
