In a significant move to enhance road safety, the Attica Region has completed the installation of 388 cameras at selected traffic lights across the basin. The system, expected to become fully operational shortly, aims to reduce traffic accidents caused by red-light violations.

Technology and Operation

The cameras will operate 24/7, focusing exclusively on recording red-light infractions. For every violation, the system will generate and transmit a comprehensive high-definition evidence package to the Hellenic Police, including:

  • Six photographs of the violation.
  • One video capturing the moment of the infraction.

The installation points were selected based on recommendations from the Attica Traffic Police, targeting intersections with high accident rates and documented danger due to signal violations.

Budget and Funding

The project has a budget of €13.38 million (plus VAT) and is funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility through the "Road Safety Improvement" program. It is part of a broader strategic plan by the Attica Region, which encompasses 31 road safety projects with a total budget of €192.9 million.

Data Privacy Measures

Particular emphasis has been placed on compliance with personal data protection regulations. According to the Region, the cameras are configured to prevent the identification of vehicle passengers. The recording is strictly limited to the vehicle, the license plate, and the details of the violation.

"This is not a revenue-driven project. It is a project of prevention, responsibility, and the protection of human life," stated the Governor of Attica, Nikos Hardalias.

Currently, the Region is collaborating with the Ministry of Digital Governance and the Hellenic Police for the technical integration of the systems to launch the network's full operational phase.
