The Attica Region has announced the completion of the installation phase for 388 red-light violation cameras at key junctions throughout the Athens metropolitan area. The project, with a total budget of €13.38 million (plus VAT), was funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility as part of the "Road Safety Improvement Program."

Technology and Privacy Measures

Operating 24/7, the cameras are designed to record red-light violations exclusively. For every infraction, the system will transmit high-definition evidence to the Hellenic Police, consisting of six photographs and one video clip. To comply with privacy regulations, specific measures have been implemented to ensure that vehicle occupants remain unidentifiable in the captured footage.

Strategic Placement and Integration

The locations for the cameras were designated by the Attica Traffic Police, based on empirical data regarding high-risk areas and the frequency of accidents caused by signal violations. Currently, the region is working with the Ministry of Digital Governance and the police to finalize the system's integration with traffic authorities' IT infrastructure for full operational deployment.

A Broader Safety Vision

Attica Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias emphasized that the project is not revenue-driven but serves as a tool for prevention and the protection of human life. This initiative is part of a comprehensive €192.9 million road safety plan comprising 31 individual projects. Other key milestones already achieved include:

  • Installation of 101 model pedestrian crossings (€6.6 million).
  • Deployment of 1,362 LED lights in 31 vehicle underpasses (€6.5 million).
  • Ongoing maintenance of a 1,623 km road network with an annual cost of €43.2 million.

Future works include road surfacing and markings on Katechaki, Alimou, and Liosion Avenues, aiming to reduce accidents and improve conditions for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
