U.S. President Donald Trump has called on large-scale data center developers to establish financial agreements with local communities, suggesting they pay "dividends" to residents. The proposal, shared via Truth Social, aims to mitigate public backlash regarding rising energy costs associated with these facilities.
Financial Incentives for Public Support
"If companies want to make data centers popular, let them reward the community and/or the people of that community with 'dividends'," Trump wrote. The President noted that he has observed instances where highly unpopular data centers became welcome additions once financial deals were struck, adding: "SIGN DEALS and build!!!"
While Trump remains a staunch advocate for data center construction to ensure American hegemony in Artificial Intelligence (AI), the infrastructure has become a flashpoint. Energy consumption concerns are currently a major theme in the upcoming midterm elections, which appear challenging for the Republican Party.
Energy Autonomy and Grid Impact
The United States currently hosts over 5,000 data centers, with the Department of Commerce projecting a 9% annual expansion through 2030. To address the strain on public infrastructure, Trump suggested that these facilities should generate their own power rather than relying on public utilities.
The President argued that large data centers should "produce their own electricity and have or sell the surplus to the local community or the grid." He emphasized that such measures would prevent utility price hikes and could potentially lead to a "significant reduction" in electricity bills for local citizens.
