Our faces may reveal far more about our internal health than the naked eye can perceive. Researchers from Mass General Brigham have developed an AI tool capable of analyzing a simple selfie to estimate an individual's biological age and predict the survival probability of cancer patients. The study's findings were recently published in the journal "The Lancet Digital Health."
The FAHR Model and Its Functions
The system, named Foundation Artificial Intelligence for Health Recognition (FAHR), is based on a model trained on approximately 40 million facial images. It was subsequently fine-tuned using more than 34,000 photographs of cancer patients. FAHR incorporates two distinct algorithms:
- FAHR-FaceAge: Focuses on nasolabial folds and the forehead to calculate biological age.
- FAHR-FaceSurvival: Analyzes the area under the eyes and the nasal bridge to predict survival probability.
According to Dr. Raymond Mak, the study's lead author, the tool is not intended to replace medical judgment. Instead, it aims to provide a non-invasive method for assessing patient resilience before intensive treatments such as surgery or radiation.
The Impact of Lifestyle Choices
The research also highlighted how daily habits are etched into the face. Smoking was found to have the most significant impact on accelerated biological aging, followed by alcohol consumption and substance use. Researchers observed that active smokers appeared biologically older than former smokers, who in turn appeared older than those who had never smoked.
Notably, the algorithm's performance remained stable despite variations in lighting, makeup, or facial expressions, and was only minimally affected by aesthetic procedures like rhinoplasty.
Toward a New Era of Preventive Medicine
This development is part of a broader trend of leveraging AI in preventive health. From AI-driven mammogram analysis for future cancer risk assessment to full-body MRI scans, technology is increasingly enabling individuals to take a more proactive role in managing their health and longevity.
