Greece is entering a new era of digital sovereignty with the inauguration of the Daedalus supercomputer in Lavrio. With a budget of €58.9 million, the new infrastructure aims to reduce dependence on foreign computing resources and provide the necessary power for developing advanced AI models within the country.
Technical Specifications and Global Ranking
Installed in the historic former Power Station at the Lavrio Technological and Cultural Park, Daedalus is ranked 31st globally. Its performance reaches 85.69 petaflops, and it is also recognized for its energy efficiency, holding the 23rd position on the Green500 list as of June 2026.
- Technology: Nvidia Grace Hopper GH200
- Cooling System: Water-cooled
- Implementing Body: GRNET (EDYTE)
- Main Contractors: Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Mainsys
Business Integration and the Pharos AI Factory
Business access will be facilitated by the Pharos AI Factory, one of the first seven AI factories selected by the EU, with a budget of €30 million. Full service availability for the business sector is expected in March 2027.
According to the plan, startups and SMEs will receive free access to computing power, while large enterprises are expected to face usage-based fees. The infrastructure will allow for the processing of sensitive data within Greece, enhancing security for healthcare providers and public organizations.
Expansion to Kozani
Simultaneously, a second supercomputer is being planned for the University of Western Macedonia in Kozani. This new system, with a sub-project budget of €21.57 million, will complement Daedalus by focusing on model execution and data analysis within a "green" data center supported by a photovoltaic installation.
