Athens municipal services remain on high alert to address the risk of wildfires, currently classified as Category 4 (very high risk). Following an update in weather forecasts, the Municipality of Athens announced that Lycabettus Hill will remain open to the public on August 15th. However, Finopoulos Hill is to stay closed until further notice.

High-Tech Surveillance and Patrols

The Municipal Police are conducting intensive patrols and monitoring of major green spaces throughout the city center. Drones equipped with thermal cameras are being deployed over Lycabettus, Strefi, Philopappou, Tourkovounia, and Ilisia to detect potential temperature fluctuations that could indicate a fire outbreak.

The Municipal Police Operations Center is operating on a 24-hour basis to provide updates and assistance to the Fire Service and other neighboring municipalities. Additionally, municipal water tankers are on constant standby for immediate deployment if necessary.

Urgent Recommendations for Citizens

Given the high fire risk exacerbated by strong winds, the Municipality of Athens has issued a strong recommendation for citizens to avoid any outdoor activities that could trigger a fire. These activities include:

  • Welding and oxygen cutting.
  • Use of blowtorches.
  • Any other dangerous actions involving fire or sparks.

Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and report any perceived danger via the 24-hour citizen service line at 1595.
