Capcom, the developer behind iconic franchises like Resident Evil, is looking toward artificial intelligence as the solution to the mounting challenges of modern game development. During the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026, programmer Satoshi Ishida detailed the company's vision for the future of the RE Engine through the "REX Project."

Efficiency and Development Workflows

According to Ishida, producing games at the scale of Resident Evil makes even simple tasks extremely time-consuming. The solution proposed by Capcom is the successful integration of AI technology into development workflows. While the studio has previously stated it will not use AI-generated assets in its games, this new strategy focuses on utilizing the technology to make development more efficient.

Toward an AI-Generation Engine

Capcom’s plan involves a slow and incremental transformation of the RE Engine into an "AI-generation game engine." The ultimate goal is a future where games are created "together with AI," ensuring that technological evolution keeps pace with the demands of next-generation titles.
