French Finance Minister Roland Lescure has voiced strong opposition to calls for slowing down Artificial Intelligence development, arguing that such initiatives primarily serve the interests of American companies that currently lead the sector.
Critique of the 'Pause' Narrative
Speaking to Reuters, Lescure noted that he perceives a clear self-interest behind proposals to decelerate technological progress. According to the minister, industry leaders are attempting to stall those following behind them to secure their own top positions.
"I clearly see that the calls for a slowdown come from those at the top of the industry… To make everyone following them slow down so they can stay in first place… I clearly see their self-interest," Lescure stated.
The European Strategy
Instead of deceleration, Lescure urged France and the rest of Europe to accelerate their efforts in the AI field. The minister argued that achieving a leadership position is the only viable way for Europe to effectively manage and control the risks associated with the technology.
"I want to intensify our efforts in France and across Europe, so that we become leaders and are able to manage the risks," he added, emphasizing the necessity for technological autonomy.
