Instagram is taking concrete steps to address the proliferation of fake AI-influencer accounts that are becoming increasingly difficult for users to distinguish from real people. The platform is updating its labeling system, renaming the "AI creator" tag to "AI-generated profile" to provide clearer notification when a profile features a persona that is not a real human being.

Transparency and User Feedback

In a recent blog post, Instagram stated that the move was prompted by user feedback regarding the deceptive nature of some accounts. "We’ve heard that people don’t like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated," the company noted, emphasizing that users want to know exactly what they are interacting with.

Penalties for Non-Disclosure

To enforce these transparency standards, Instagram will actively seek out accounts that fail to self-label their AI-generated personas. Profiles found in violation will face reach limitations, meaning their content will no longer be recommended to non-followers in the Reels or Explore sections. Profile owners who believe they have been wrongly flagged will have the option to appeal the decision.

Scope of the New Rules

The platform clarified that these requirements do not apply to all uses of artificial intelligence. Users who employ AI tools strictly for content creation or editing do not need to use the "AI-generated profile" label. The crackdown is specifically targeted at accounts that represent an AI-generated person as a human entity.
