Google is navigating a fresh wave of high-profile departures within its AI division as DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis announced he is stepping back from day-to-day responsibilities. Hassabis, a central figure since Google’s acquisition of DeepMind, will transition to a strategic oversight role as Chief Scientist at Alphabet and Chair of DeepMind, handing daily operations to Koray Kavukcuoglu.
The Shift to AGI and Discovery Loop
In a memo detailing his decision, Hassabis stated that this shift allows him to focus on the "big picture" regarding Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), which he believes is now "close at hand." He will continue to lead Isomorphic Labs, Google's venture into AI-driven biomedical solutions.
Simultaneously, a formidable group of senior researchers has announced their exit. Quoc Le, Oriol Vinyals, Jeff Dean, and Sanjay Ghemawat are leaving to launch Discovery Loop, a startup dedicated to using AI to automate scientific discovery. Notably, Discovery Loop is structured as a public benefit corporation.
The Loss of Jeff Dean and Political Tensions
The departure of Jeff Dean, Google’s 30th employee, marks a significant symbolic and technical loss. Dean was instrumental in building Google's search infrastructure and its recent Gemini models. Reports suggest Dean was part of a group internal voices pushing back against the company’s increasing ties with the Trump administration.
Despite personal efforts by CEO Sundar Pichai to retain the group, the exodus follows other major losses, including Noam Shazeer to OpenAI and John Jumper to Anthropic. This leadership shakeup arrives as Google appears to be lagging behind competitors, with the anticipated Gemini 3.5 Pro model missing its original June release window.
