Samsung has unveiled the Vision AI Companion platform at the IFA 2026 exhibition in Berlin, a technology designed to fundamentally change how we interact with our televisions. The device is evolving from a passive display unit into a digital assistant that understands on-screen content and can engage in natural conversations with the viewer.

Beyond Simple Voice Commands

Unlike traditional systems limited to basic commands like "open Netflix," Vision AI Companion allows users, via a dedicated "AI button" on the remote, to ask questions about what they are currently watching. The system can identify actors, filming locations, provide details about a director's filmography, or suggest similar content based on the current context.

A prime example is during a football match, where a viewer can ask for a player's identity, their previous team, or their statistics from the last game. The TV maintains the context of the conversation, allowing for natural follow-up questions.

An Ecosystem of AI Services

Vision AI Companion acts as an "umbrella" integrating various AI services and models. Samsung’s ecosystem combines several key players:

  • Bixby: For voice interaction.
  • Perplexity: For real-time web search and answers.
  • Microsoft Copilot and Google Gemini: For broader AI capabilities and agent functions.

Beyond conversation, the technology extends to image and sound enhancement through features such as AI Upscaling Pro, Live Translate for real-time dialogue translation, and AI Gaming Mode for optimized gameplay. Samsung describes this approach as "visual and conversational intelligence," a trend other consumer electronics manufacturers are expected to follow shortly.
