Anthropic has officially entered the AI agent race with the announcement of Claude Duet. Positioned as a direct competitor to Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s Dots, the new agent is specifically designed to assist professionals and small business owners in managing their digital workflows.
Core Capabilities
Built on the Claude Opus 5.5 model, Claude Duet functions as a proactive assistant rather than a passive chatbot. Anthropic describes a workflow where the agent provides a morning brief of important items across connected apps and monitors those platforms throughout the day, messaging the user only when urgent attention is required.
The agent is capable of handling a wide spectrum of tasks, including:
- Administrative duties like meeting scheduling.
- Complex data tasks such as building multi-tool dashboards.
- Financial and sales forecasting.
- Prototyping and web application development.
Infrastructure and Safety Protocols
To perform its duties, Claude Duet utilizes a virtual machine equipped with a browser. It integrates memory and skills directly from the Claude ecosystem. Addressing security concerns, Anthropic has implemented a "human-in-the-loop" requirement for sensitive actions; the agent must request explicit approval before sending payments or deleting files.
Furthermore, a dedicated classifier and safety system prompt have been introduced to prevent the sharing of highly sensitive data, such as credit card numbers, even when requested by the user or a process.
Current Limitations and Access
Anthropic labels this release as an "early version" and a "research preview," acknowledging that the agent may still misread message threads or misjudge the urgency of notifications. It is also noted to be less effective at personal errands, such as ticket bookings. Currently, Claude Duet is available as a standalone app on iOS and Android, as well as via the web, but access is restricted to Pro and Max subscribers in the United States via a waitlist.
