Google has officially launched its ‘Universal Cart,’ an intelligent AI-powered shopping tool designed to streamline the consumer experience just in time for Black Friday and the holiday season. Originally previewed at the Google I/O event in May, the tool is now rolling out to users in the United States via the Gemini app and Google Search.
A Unified Shopping Experience
The Universal Cart functions as a centralized digital space where users can save products from multiple retailers simultaneously. By using the Gemini app or Google Search’s AI Mode, shoppers can aggregate items from various sources into one unified cart. While currently limited to these platforms, Google intends to integrate the feature into Gmail and YouTube in the future, though no specific timeline has been provided.
Smart Notifications and Payment Integration
Beyond simple organization, the tool offers proactive features such as notifications for price drops and restocks, reducing the need for users to manually monitor individual retail sites. It also identifies and displays relevant promotional codes for saved items.
When it comes to purchasing, users can choose to pay via Google Wallet or transfer their items directly to the merchant’s native cart for checkout. Furthermore, in conjunction with Google Wallet, the Universal Cart can analyze the benefits and perks of a user’s saved credit cards to suggest the most advantageous payment method for a specific transaction.
The Race for Agentic AI Shopping
The launch highlights the intensifying competition in AI-assisted commerce. Google’s rivals, including OpenAI and Meta, have introduced agentic AI assistants capable of shopping on a user's behalf. Similarly, Shopify recently expanded its platform to allow AI agents to browse and purchase from its listings. This trend suggests a major industry bet: that the future of retail involves automated systems handling the logistical labor of online shopping.
