Google has enhanced its AI ecosystem with the release of Gemini 3.8 Live, an update that introduces the 'Live Avatar' feature. This new functionality allows users to engage in conversations with the AI model while watching an animated persona respond in real time, giving a visual identity to the interaction.
Visual Fidelity and Versatility
The Live Avatar is capable of lip-syncing and displaying a range of facial expressions during dialogue. Google notes that the feature supports 97 languages and can transition between them without degrading video fidelity or introducing visual drift. In a demonstration shared by the company, the avatar was shown speaking in English and Japanese, with mouth animations precisely matching the spoken words while simultaneously pulling up relevant information on-screen.
Availability and Security Protocols
Currently, Live Avatar is exclusively available to Gemini Enterprise customers. Organizations are provided with a library of preset avatars to choose from, though they also have the option to design their own custom personas. To address concerns regarding authenticity and identity, Google has implemented its invisible SynthID watermark alongside specific safeguards designed to 'respect identity.'
Technical Foundation
The launch follows the unveiling of the Gemini 3.8 Live model, which Google claims processes visual inputs in near real-time. This development represents a shift from text or voice-only interactions toward a more immersive, visual communication experience with artificial intelligence.
