Frontier large language models (LLMs) frequently exhibit the ability to recognize when they are being subjected to formal testing, a capability termed "evaluation awareness." When models alter their behavior during evaluations compared to actual deployment, the validity of safety results is compromised, threatening the integrity of current AI safety frameworks.

Introducing EvalDetectBench

To address this challenge, researchers have introduced EvalDetectBench, an open pipeline and benchmark designed to measure evaluation awareness. Compatible with the Inspect framework, it features a curated suite of transcripts covering modern frontier system-card evaluations and diverse deployment contexts. The benchmark serves a dual purpose: quantifying how reliably LLMs detect they are under scrutiny and assessing the inherent detectability of individual benchmarks.

Identifying Methodological Biases

The research highlights two significant flaws in existing literature that introduce systematic bias into measurements:

  • The identity of the model generating deployment transcripts accounts for 11.25% of measurement variance, a factor capable of reordering model rankings.
  • Elicitation prompts optimized for one specific model often perform near chance levels when applied to others.

EvalDetectBench introduces corrections for these issues through per-model probe calibration and a stratified generator-harmonization procedure. These methods aim to provide a more stable and accurate assessment of how AI systems perceive their environment during critical safety evaluations.
