In a pivotal presentation regarding the future of national defense, Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias outlined Phase C of the new structure for the Armed Forces. The plan focuses on transitioning to a joint multi-domain battlefield, integrating cutting-edge technologies, space, and cyberspace, while simultaneously undertaking a radical reorganization of infrastructure.
Technological Superiority and Space
The new structure envisions the full integration of unmanned and autonomous systems across all three branches. A significant component is the development of national space capabilities, with plans to acquire 16 new satellites (1 geostationary telecom, 3 telecommunications, 6 optical observation, 3 signal intelligence, and 3 SAR radar), which will augment the 16 existing low-orbit optical satellites.
Furthermore, new specialized commands are being established, including:
- An Unmanned Systems Brigade.
- A Space Operations Command within the Air Force.
- A Cyber Command and a Computer Science School.
- Training centers for autonomous maritime and aerial systems.
Economic Rationalization and Camp Closures
As part of the adjustment, the plan mandates the abolition of 56 units and 126 installations/camps. This move, combined with the utilization of material with low operational capability, is expected to yield total resource savings of 1.13 billion euros over a five-year period. These funds are earmarked for the welfare of active personnel and retirees.
Mr. Dendias provided specific efficiency examples, noting that new FDI-type frigates have a 73% lower annual operating cost and require 38% fewer personnel compared to older S-type frigates. Similar reductions in personnel requirements are observed in systems like PULS and SPIKE, allowing for more effective human resource allocation.
Recruitment and Healthcare Infrastructure
The program also includes strengthening the workforce with 2,000 recruitments in 2025 and 1,000 in 2026. In the healthcare sector, the creation of an advanced Trauma Unit and a Joint Rehabilitation Center in Penteli is being promoted, upgrading services for Armed Forces members.
