The European Commission has approved funding for six new research projects under the Horizon Europe program, with DEDDIE (Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator) as an active participant. These projects are currently in the contracting phase, with their official launch expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Through these initiatives, the Operator will collaborate with a broad network of European entities, including other Distribution System Operators (DSOs), universities, research organizations, and private enterprises. The primary objective is the development and pilot implementation of cutting-edge technologies designed to meet the evolving needs of modern electricity distribution networks.

Three Key Research Pillars

The actions within these new programs are structured around three central axes:

  • Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI): The GENESIS-EU and GenAISIS projects focus on data utilization and decision-support tools to improve the planning and operation of energy systems.
  • Next-Generation Substations: The NEXTELAR and GRID-PRO projects utilize digital twins and AI to enhance network observability, resilience, and flexibility.
  • Energy Communities: The EU4ENER and ESTIRPE projects explore solutions that facilitate citizen and local authority participation in energy production, management, and exchange.

DEDDIE's participation in these programs aims to drive the digital transformation and modernization of the Greek distribution grid, at a time when the rise of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and e-mobility are fundamentally reshaping the energy landscape.
