Billionaire investor Bill Ackman has announced a $400 million commitment to establish a new research center dedicated to brain health, rehabilitation, and longevity. The decision follows a severe medical crisis involving his 26-year-old daughter, Lucy, who suffered a brain hemorrhage last February.

A Personal Catalyst for Scientific Advancement

Lucy Ackman was found unconscious in her Brooklyn apartment and underwent emergency surgery at Mount Sinai in New York, approximately 19 hours after the hemorrhage occurred. Despite warnings from medical professionals regarding the low probability of success given the timeframe, the Pershing Square Capital Management founder insisted on providing the best possible care, pledging unlimited resources for her recovery.

After spending weeks in a coma and initially losing the ability to breathe independently, walk, see, or speak, Lucy has shown steady progress over the last six months. Her father reports that she has regained cognitive functions and is making strides in physical therapy, though she continues to face significant visual impairments.

The Ackman Oxman Institute’s Mission

Founded by Ackman and his wife, Neri Oxman, the Ackman Oxman Institute will be based in Manhattan. In addition to the $400 million funding, the couple has contributed 10 million shares of Pershing Square to the initiative.

The institute aims to become a global leader in several key areas:

Integrating Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is set to play a pivotal role in the institute's research agenda. Ackman believes that the rapid evolution of AI can accelerate scientific discovery and enhance our understanding of the interface between the human brain and emerging technologies.

The institute’s board is expected to include high-profile figures, such as a Nobel laureate, the neurosurgeon who treated Lucy Ackman, and the founder of a pharmaceutical company, ensuring a multi-disciplinary approach to brain science.
