SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has stated that the US government and President Donald Trump are solely responsible for any restrictions imposed on the Starshield military satellite network in Ukraine. In a post on X, Musk emphasized that Starshield systems are fully owned and controlled by the US government, adding that any limits on speed or usage are decided by the American armed forces and, ultimately, the President.

Ukrainian Concerns and Drone Operations

This clarification follows allegations from Kyiv that SpaceX imposed new restrictions on the Starshield service without warning, disrupting military operations. Serhii Beskrestnov, an advisor to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on defense technology, revealed that speed limits were applied to Starlink terminals in motion, affecting critical missions. The network serves as the primary infrastructure for Ukraine's interceptor drones, which are vital against Russian Shahed drones.

While some restrictions appear to have been partially lifted, the situation remains fluid. Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov publicly thanked Musk for restoring Starlink connectivity at speeds up to 160 km/h but stressed that removing speed limits on Starshield entirely is now critical for the country's defense.

Geopolitical Friction and the Energy Truce

These developments occur against a backdrop of heightened diplomatic tension. President Trump has openly criticized Ukraine for its attacks on Russian energy facilities, claiming these strikes are responsible for rising diesel prices. Amidst this friction, Washington has reportedly threatened to halt the sharing of defense security intelligence with Kyiv, with Ukrainian officials noting a lack of timely warnings regarding recent Russian attacks.
