Eleonora Meleti, Member of the European Parliament for New Democracy and the EPP, has submitted a series of amendments to the European Parliament's Committee on Culture and Education report. The intervention aims to bolster the protection of creators within the cultural and creative sectors as they face the rapid rise of Artificial Intelligence.
Copyright and Fair Compensation
Ms. Meleti’s proposals focus on strengthening the protection of intellectual property rights. Specifically, she advocates for a framework that ensures creators receive fair compensation when their works are utilized by AI systems. Furthermore, the amendments call for an analysis of how AI affects employment levels and the overall income of individuals working in the cultural sphere.
AI as a Tool, Not a Replacement
This legislative move follows a meeting held last year between Meleti and the prominent composer Phoebus, along with other songwriters, regarding the challenges within the music industry. The primary objective is to ensure that AI serves as a helpful tool for creation rather than a substitute for human creators, ensuring their work remains recognized and justly rewarded.
