With the arrival of iOS 27 later this month, Apple is expected to introduce a new feature called iPhone Handoff. This functionality will allow users to switch between two separate phones while maintaining the same phone number, streamlining the experience of multi-device ownership.

From WWDC Tease to Xcode Demo

The feature was briefly mentioned during the WWDC keynote in June, but concrete details were absent at the time. A recently surfaced demo clip from Xcode 27’s Device Hub now illustrates how the feature is configured. It allows users to pair two iPhones, designating one as the primary device and the other as a "companion" unit.

Strategic Alignment with iPhone Ultra

The launch of iPhone Handoff appears strategically timed with the rumored debut of the foldable iPhone Ultra. As users may not always wish to carry a bulky and premium-priced foldable device, Handoff enables a temporary transition to a smaller or more rugged secondary device—such as an older model—without the friction of swapping SIM cards.

Carrier Dependencies

The seamless nature of the feature will ultimately rely on carrier support. While references to T-Mobile US and Telekom.de have been identified within the system code, the extent of support from other global carriers remains unconfirmed as the iOS 27 release approaches.
