Brown Brothers Media, a digital publishing firm recently embroiled in a scandal over unethical practices, appears to be facing a total collapse. Following an investigation by Futurism that exposed the company’s methods, Google has intervened, algorithmically removing the firm's network of websites from Search and Google News results.
The Content Farm Strategy
The company’s modus operandi involved acquiring reputable but financially struggling websites with established SEO histories, such as VegOut, Silicon Canals, and Space Daily. Once acquired, these sites were transformed into AI content farms. Articles were mass-produced using AI tools, frequently featuring plagiarism and fabricated news (fabulism), and were attributed to non-existent journalists with entirely faked biographies.
By utilizing sensationalist headlines and publishing numerous variations of the same story, the network initially managed to dominate the “For You” tab on Google News. However, following the exposé, Google applied a severe algorithmic penalty. Currently, BBM's sites have virtually vanished from search results; for instance, only 10 static pages of the once-popular VegOut remain indexed.
Operational Shutdown and Controversial Ties
The loss of visibility has forced the company to halt operations across most of its platforms. VegOut has deleted all content published since last May, while Science Blog and Silicon Canals have ceased updates. The investigation also highlighted controversial links between one of the company's founders and Ghislaine Maxwell, noting that the Ideapod platform—now part of the group—originally launched from Maxwell’s home.
Despite the functional shutdown of its news outlets, Brown Brothers Media’s corporate website remains online. It continues to display a manifesto claiming high editorial standards and transparency—a claim that stands in stark contrast to the systematic plagiarism and deception uncovered by investigators.
