Wondermind, the mental health startup co-founded in 2021 by Selena Gomez, her mother Mandy Teefey, and entrepreneur Daniella Pierson, is facing a federal fraud lawsuit. Investors, including Bausch + Lomb CEO Brent Saunders and Marc Roberts, claim they were misled into investing nearly $1.2 million into the company based on false representations.
Allegations of False Assurances
According to the lawsuit filed recently, the plaintiffs allege that Wondermind's leadership presented a fictitious image of business health. Specifically, it is claimed they were given assurances regarding partnerships with major financial institutions like JPMorgan and Fidelity, which allegedly never existed. Furthermore, investors maintain that a mobile app, a central pillar of the business plan, was never developed despite promises to the contrary.
The lawsuit also highlights that Selena Gomez was positioned as the central marketing figure to attract capital, while later reports suggested she distanced herself from the company due to internal disagreements with her mother.
Internal Conflicts and Financial Ambiguity
The legal battle follows 2025 reports describing a dysfunctional management structure. Investigations by "The Cut" detailed serious tensions between co-CEOs Teefey and Pierson, leading to Pierson's departure in 2023. Investors claim they only became aware of the extent of these administrative issues through media reports.
One of the most significant points in the lawsuit concerns an alleged "escrow account." The plaintiffs claim that Teefey assured them a fund had been set up to return their investments, but the lawsuit alleges that no such account ever existed.
The Defense Response
Selena Gomez's attorney, Mathew Rosengart, characterized the allegations as "completely baseless." Similarly, a spokesperson for Daniella Pierson categorically denied the claims, noting that the entrepreneur had invested her own funds and received no salary. Mandy Teefey has not yet issued a public statement regarding the matter.
